A development group's representative revealed the Wawa brand Thursday, near the end of a contentious meeting. The commission then unanimously recommended approval of a request to allow gas pumps and a car wash. Chairman Hunter Platt had warned during the hearing, "I will have this room cleared," and officers removed about 300 residents after the vote.

More than 300 Little River residents came to oppose the amendment.

Neighbors raised concerns about traffic, unsafe turning lanes and a business open around the clock. Planners said the acreage is already zoned for commercial use. Attorney Franklin Daniels said, "This is just an amendment that would allow from the gas pumps."
